Yes. Clients get similar results to their previous formaldehyde treatments without the health risks. We have clients and stylists who say that S4 is better than their former traditional keratin treatment and can be done in half the time.

Yes. Stylists have reported that they will never do another formaldehyde treatment again and find it a relief to have no more formaldehyde-related eye and respiratory irritations. Many stylists say S4 is easier, faster, safer and gives a similar result to formaldehyde-based formulas and will be their new flagship smoothing treatment. Although there are stylists who will continue to use formaldehyde-based formulas, increasing numbers of stylists and their clients are requesting an alternative to this toxic ingredient.

The difference is significant. Up until S4, formaldehyde free smoothing systems were an apology in performance to traditional keratin treatments. There was always a “but” when being compared. S4 will last for months. Like formaldehyde-based keratin smoothing treatments, the amount of time S4 will last varies by client hair type, hair texture, and maintenance routine. S4’s BEYOND and EXTREME gentle straightening formulas will last a little bit longer than other keratin salon smoothing treatments and the smoothing formula INFINITY will last about the same. The FLAT IRON FREE smoothing treatment will last for less time than the others.

No. S4 will reduce frizz and deliver straighter, smoother, healthier looking, more manageable, and exquisitely beautiful hair and will last for months. It is not a lye or no-lye relaxer, and it is not a Japanese straightener and will not deliver identical results. The results are much more like a salon keratin treatment.

No. S4 gives you the hair you want without harsh chemicals like ammonium thioglycolate, lye (sodium hydroxide) or no-lye (guanidine carbonate) that can damage your skin or your scalp. It contains no formaldehyde or aldehydes of any type.

No, not because of the treatment. You may see some vapor when you blow dry or flat iron, but this is primarily steam and does not contain any dangerous chemicals.

No. Many stylists report it is easier and takes less time to apply.

Gloves are not required, but since the pH is comparable to lemon juice (for the FLAT IRON FREE and INFINITY formulas) and a banana (for the BEYOND and EXTREME formulas), you may want to wear them as the treatment may irritate abrasions on hands and cuticles if gloves are not worn.

Like with any professional treatment, it is not recommended. The treatment could temporarily tarnish jewelry.

It is fine to use plastic or glass bowls, plastic clips, and combs. Do NOT use any metal bowls, clips, or combs. The pH of the treatment which is on the acidic side of the pH scale can tarnish metal.

Yes. One of the top testing labs in the United States performed the HPLC test on S4and found no detectable formaldehyde

All S4 products are free of formaldehyde and do not give off formaldehyde gases. We are also sulfate free, paraben free and free of all toxic chemicals.

Our INFINITY & FLAT IRON FREE formulations are the most universal as they work on all hair types including bleached blond, highlighted and damaged hair. INFINITY delivers reduced frizz, straighter, smoother, healthier looking, more manageable, and exquisitely beautiful hair that lasts for months. The FLAT IRON FREE treatment provides the client with smoother, softer more manageable hair that can be done in less than half the time of a traditional keratin treatment. It can be used on any client who wants to reduce frizz and add luster and manageability but who does not want to lose much of their wave or curl. It’s a great choice for clients who have delicate or damaged hair since no flat Iron Is required. The glyoxylic carbocysteine technology combined with a propriety blend of keratin protein, botanic extracts including Abaco Neem Oil and vitamins enter through the cuticle to the cortex moisturizing and fortifying the hair strand while gently modifying the bonds to reduce curl. Both treatments have a pH of about 2, similar to a lemon.

Our BEYOND and EXTREME are gentle straightening formulas that deliver excellent results and last as long or longer than the formaldehyde-based treatments. These two formulas with a pH of 5, about that of a banana, use the latest science in hair care to open the cuticle of the hair and infuse a proprietary blend of botanical extracts, vitamins, and proteins, including keratins and certified organic Abaco Neem directly into the hair strand through to the cortex. Our process changes the actual curl pattern of the hair and locks it into a smoother, straighter shape without destroying the disulfide bridges. After blow drying and sealing the cuticle of the hair with heat from a flat iron, the moisturizing and fortifying ingredients are secured in place to smooth and renew from the inside out for months.

To minimize this, be sure to follow the instructions — apply just enough treatment to coat the damp hair, rinse according to the directions for the formula you are using before blow drying, and blow dry thoroughly before flat ironing. Some clients may have a lingering odor in their hair when wet. This will disappear as the client continues to wash their hair. Again, make sure you rinse enough and get the hair 100% dry before flat ironing.

S4 uses completely different technology with 4 formulas that match the client’s hair type and texture. Most carbocysteine products wash out very quickly, sometimes in just weeks. S4 delivers reduced frizz, straighter, smoother, stronger, healthier looking, more manageable, and exquisitely beautiful hair and will last for months.

No. S4 is gently modifying the bonds with a pH of fruit — which is gentle.

No. S4 is not a relaxer, and it is not a reverse perm. It is a new and different technology. S4 gently modifies and restructures the disulfide bonds in the hair to soften the overall shape of the curl. Lye relaxers use sodium hydroxide with a pH of 12-14. There are “no-lye” relaxers which use guanidine carbonate, with a pH of 9-11. Japanese straighteners use ammonium thioglycolate with a pH of 9 to 9.6. These products are strongly alkaline, and a neutralizer must be used. If the process is not timed correctly, these alkaline products can quickly destroy the client’s hair. S4 is not alkaline at all. It does not contain sodium hydroxide, guanidine carbonate or ammonium thioglycolate. It does not need to be neutralized. It is technology like no other and you and your clients will love the results. Although the BEYOND and EXTREME formulas smell slightly like a “perm” solution, they are NOT a perm solution in any way, shape, or form and do not require a neutralizer as does a perm.

The FLAT IRON FREE & INFINITY formulas will gradually wear off. The amount of time it will last depends on the client’s hair type and texture as well as their maintenance routine, but it will last for months. The BEYOND & EXTREME formulas use a slightly different technology that gently modifies the bonds in a different fashion and will last for up to 6 months but will not leave a strong line of demarcation between treatments.

You have the option! If you used the BEYOND or EXTREME formula and your client is loving their current curl and wave pattern, then you may just do the regrowth. If your client would like an overall straighter look to their curl and wave, you may do the entire head. If you used the INFINITY or FLAT IRON FREE formula, you may proceed to do the entire head. With any of the formulas, you always have the option to just do a section of your client’s hair, such as a bang or the nape.

S4 is a next generation smoothing system that uses the latest advances in science, along with only the finest ingredients, to create a product that delivers the results salon clients demand from a keratin smoothing treatment, safely and effectively. And, because S4 works from the inside out in modifying the overall shape of the curl, our results last for months.

Although S4 delivers similar results to these treatments, it does not make the hair flat and lifeless. S4 still allows the client to immediately put a bend in their hair, curl with a flat iron, and still achieve voluminous results.

S4 uses a revolutionary pH system with similar acidity to that of a lemon (for FLAT IRON FREE & INFINITY) and a banana (for BEYOND & EXTREME) to open the cuticle to allow the infusion of a proprietary blend of keratin, botanical extracts, vitamins, and certified organic Abaco Neem to enter through the cuticle to the cortex.

Unlike most smoothing treatments, with S4 the hair can be washed or colored immediately after the treatment and there are no restrictions to exercising, wearing ponytails, clips, or pins. Any styling products may be used immediately, but we recommend the S4 Plush Shampoo, Plush Conditioner, and amazing Styling Crème. Our Styling Crème is an important part of the system and will keep hair looking and feeling great between treatments.

Although S4 contains no formaldehyde or other carcinogens or dangerous chemicals, it is the Company’s policy not to recommend any products to pregnant women or children, so please check with your physician first.

Yes. S4 has four (4) different formula options to choose from for all hair types and texture, whether it is colored, bleached, highlighted, or damaged. It can even be applied over other chemical treatments such as previous keratin smoothing treatments, Japanese straighteners, and relaxers. If your client’s hair is bleached, highlighted, damaged, or exceptionally fine or fragile, use the S4 INFINITY or the FLAT IRON FREE formula which work on all hair types and textures, and be sure to follow the directions regarding flat ironing temperature and number of passes using this gentlest of our 4 formulations.

As with any professional hair product, S4 is not for everyone. Like any keratin smoothing treatment, the amount of curl or wave that is reduced depends on the hair type and texture. If you do NOT want to reduce any curl or waves, S4 is not the right treatment for your client. If you are not sure, do the treatment on a small section at the nape of your client’s neck to test the results. Hair that is extremely dry, damaged, heavily bleached, very delicate or has extensive split ends should consider appropriate moisturizing treatments and hair trims to bring the hair back to health before using S4 or any other professional treatment.

Yes, S4 works great on ALL hair types and textures, Including African American and/or resistant hair. S4 will reduce frizz and deliver straighter, smoother, stronger, healthier looking, more manageable, and exquisitely beautiful hair and will last for months. It is not a lye or no-lye relaxer, and it is not a Japanese straightener and will not deliver identical results.

It is important that all the hair is completely saturated, especially the ends which tend to be the driest and most porous. Make sure to massage the treatment into the hair.

No. Follow the instructions to make sure you get the best results. Unnecessarily increasing heat can damage hair. Excessive heat may also activate unwanted lifting of color.

Yes, if they are human hair. Avoid the bond while flat ironing.

There is nothing in the FLAT IRON FREE or INFINITY formulas to turn the hair yellow or orange, but blonde, highlighted, or white hair has been known to turn yellow or orange for a variety of reasons. This could occur during the treatment, and it may be outside your control. Causes could include type of color or treatments that are already in the hair, type of water, medication—even an aspirin can affect hair color!

Another thing that can cause a problem is a flat iron that is too hot for blonde, highlighted, or white hair. If you are addressing this issue, try starting at a low temperature, even lower than the recommended 380°F (193°C). Remember the goal is to get the hair silky. Simply adjust the temperature only to the point where the hair gets easily silky. You should not have to do a lot of passes, generally no more than 3.

If you are using the INFINITY formula which we recommend for bleached blonde, highlighted, and white hair. If you see the hair getting yellow, STOP and turn the temperature down. DO NOT over-flat iron the hair. Silky is the key word. Once it is silky there is no reason to continue to flat iron. The same applies to the FLAT IRON FREE formula should you decide to either flat Iron the whole head or just do difficult areas.

Remember, you can always adjust color or use a toner after the service if you wish. Another tip from stylists with whom we discussed this question is that blue/violet-based shampoo can reduce/eliminate discoloration.

Depending on the hair type, texture, and length, it should take you about half as long as traditional keratin treatments to do the BEYOND AND EXTREME formulas. For the INFINITY formula it will take about the same amount of time as other smoothing treatments - about 1 ½ to 2 ½ hours. The FLAT IRON FREE takes much less time as no flat ironing is required. You should charge the same amount you charge for other smoothing treatments in your salon.

The “average” head of hair will take about 1-2 ounces. Depending on hair type, texture, and length, it could take anywhere from 2 to 3 ounces.

It is important to follow the directions, but if you are not exactly right on the timing, it will still work fine. A few minutes longer will not damage the hair but try to stick with the recommendations for the best results.

As with all smoothing treatments, there is a potential to lift color. Whether or not any color is lifted and how much color is lifted is a function of the hair type and condition as well as the type of color and the temperature of the blow dryer and/or flat iron. If your client’s hair has blue, yellow, pink, or green or any other bright unnatural colors, there may be a greater tendency for lift. Color or toner may be applied immediately after treatment as per the directions for each formula.

Use the FLAT IRON FREE or INFINITY formula which work great on all hair types and textures but is formulated specifically for bleached blonde, highlighted, and damaged hair.

No. Bleach destroys the protein in hair. The FLAT IRON FREE and INFINITY treatments which are the biggest frizz busters were designed specifically for bleached and highlighted hair, no matter what the hair type and texture is. The BEYOND & EXTREME treatments which are gentle straighteners provide the longest lasting results and will reduce the curl and wave more than the FLAT IRON FREE or INFINITY treatments and are great for all clients who do not have bleach, highlights, or heavily damaged hair and want to remove about medium frizz.

COLOR may be applied immediately AFTER the treatment. We do NOT recommend using this treatment on top of FRESH color as it may result in color lift.

Some hairstylists color before & some color after. If you color AFTER which is PREFERRED, you will not have color lift. If you color after the treatment it can be done the same day or any time after. If you color BEFORE, many stylists deepen the color a few levels to account for any lift that may occur.

If you color before the treatment, S4 FLAT IRON FREE & INFINITY, like all smoothing treatments, may lift some color & make highlights appear brighter. Whether or not any color is lifted & how much color is lifted is a function of the hair type, texture & condition as well as the type of color.

It helps to reduce the heat on your blow dryer & flat iron during the treatment as excessive heat can also lift color.

Yes. If your client prefers to simply air dry their hair at any time after the treatment, be sure to send them home with the S4 Styling Crème, a multi-faceted nutrition-rich styling crème that works on all hair types and provides a slightly velvet finish leaving the hair smooth, swingy, adds texture and body, increases the volume, and further improves the healthier look of the hair. This addictive crème which is applied to damp or dry hair provides exceptional shine and manageability and is great for an unbelievable blow dry or to enhance and define waves and curl for those who like to air dry their hair.

No. Flat ironing is only required when you first perform the treatment on the client to seal the cuticle unless you are using the FLAT IRON FREE which does not require a flat iron although it’s optional to do so. The only time to use a flat iron thereafter is when the client wants to. Many people prefer to air dry or just use a blow dryer after the treatment is done at the salon.

If you are unsure about using this or any professional treatment, a strand test is always a good way to see if your client will be happy with the results. Simply do the treatment on a small section at the nape of your client’s neck to test the results.

Yes, but these services can weaken hair. You can use S4 after these treatments, but you must be careful not to use too much heat from the flat iron. There is nothing in the S4 treatment to damage hair, but a flat iron that is too hot can damage already weakened hair. If your client’s hair is weak, we recommend that you do deep conditioning treatments and give regular trims to bring their hair back to health. If you are unsure about using S4 or any professional treatment, a strand test is always a good way to see if your client will be happy with the results. If you are not familiar with doing a strand test, simply do the treatment on a small section at the nape of their neck to test the results.

We manufacture and ship from Florida. Our manufacturing facility has been making products for some of the finest salon brands in the world for almost two decades.

It’s faster and easier to apply this way and unlike any other treatment, it is not necessary to section the hair and use an applicator brush. (You may find it helpful to section the hair into 4-6 sections of DAMP hair and apply to each large section, massage in and comb through each section). The fastest and easiest way to apply the treatments is to squeeze a small amount at a time of the treatment into your hands, rub your hands together, and apply it to DAMP hair with your FINGERS, working it into the hair in the same way you would with shampoo and MASSAGE it into the hair all the way to the root. Do NOT overapply — just use enough treatment to coat the damp hair. If you prefer to do it the traditional way which will take longer and use more product than necessary, and which we do not recommend, you may place the treatment into a non-metallic bowl, section hair, and then use an applicator brush to apply treatment, massaging each section as you go along, and comb through at end.

No, but you can if you want to, especially if the client has oily, virgin, or uncolored gray or a lot of product build up in the hair (see TIPS in the Directions for Use). Otherwise, it is all right to use your regular shampoo and conditioner.

You may use any shampoo and conditioner. However, any colorist will recommend sulfate-free shampoo to extend your client’s color service, but it is not required for this treatment. The type of shampoo and conditioner used will not affect the longevity of the treatment but to assure the best possible results we recommend S4 Sulfate-free PLUSH Shampoo and PLUSH Conditioner followed by the very popular S4 Styling Crème for incredible blow dries and to define curl/wave.

Yes. Clients frequently report that they can now blow dry their hair in half the time.

Yes. You can do just a bang or the nape for example.

Yes. Some stylists like to customize the treatment for their clients. For example, you might use either the BEYOND or EXTREME formulas on the underneath part of the hair where It’s curlier and then use the INFINITY or FLAT IRON FREE on the top section of the hair which may be straighter and more damaged or bleached. Just follow the timing Instructions for each of the formulas based on the hair type and texture.

Yes. The science of S4 does not end with the completion of the treatment. Our unique line of back bar and at-home products are specially formulated to complement our smoothing treatment, as well as continue to improve the overall condition and manageability of the client’s hair. And, for the client who has naturally smooth hair and does not require an S4 treatment, our SULFATE-FREE products can be used to help keep their hair healthy looking, manageable and frizz free. These include:

PLUSH Shampoo: Renews and restores moisture balance to weak, dull, or processed hair. Our proprietary blend of nutrients and botanicals add beauty and elasticity to help prevent breakage. Sulfate and paraben-free formula gently cleanses and is safe for chemically or color treated hair. This will become your preferred back bar and aftercare shampoo for all clients.
